about the space

Dabble Maker Space is an inclusive, accessible space for folx to have access to tools and the space to create. We have invested in equipment so you don't have to.

The space itself is divided into five main areas:

Tech Space:
Here you will find a set of computers, 3D printers and cricuts.

The Studio:
The communal workspace which also doubles as space to host our workshops and private events.

A set of storage lockers are also available to rent for short term storage of projects, personal materials and/or tools.

Just outside this space is a sink to wash up after your session. Along with a fridge, coffee maker and kettle for tea.

The Cozy Nook:
A few comfy chairs are available to craft comfortably from or simply relax in if you are waiting for a workshop. If you are looking for inspiration you will also find a selection of craft books to puruse.

Retail Display
Next to the Cozy Nook there is selection of products from local makers which are available for purchase.

Private Studios:
There are 3 private studios available for rent.
Our Story
Rachel Jacobson is the owner and founder of Dabble Maker Space Inc.
Rachel envisioned a shared space for makers, with retail area and a space for workshops to be taught. This idea then grew to include tools and resources which could be used by community. Providing opporunities for people of all ages to follow their curiosity, to learn new skills, or get support to complete their projects.

There were three things that led to the concept that would become Dabble Maker Space.

-
The first was seeing home based makers beginning to outgrow their space and a lack of affordable options for them to take that next step.
-
The second was seeing the wealth of knowledge and skills within Chatham-Kent after a summer spent attending local markets with their child’s business, Wee Stitch It, and connecting with other makers.
-
The third came when one of their kiddos told them that they had learned about the trades at school and that they were interested in learning more about carpentry and pastry chefs. Rachel quickly realized there wasn’t anywhere in Chatham for somebody to try out these skills or trades to see if they really might enjoy them.

our values
INCLUSION
Everybody who enters Dabble Maker Space Inc., whether for a single workshop or as a member, deserves to feel welcomed, safe, respected and valued for their contributions to the community and space.
DIVERSITY
Chatham-Kent is full of diverse experiences and backgrounds, we want to celebrate everything that makes up an individual and see what their unique cumulative experience will lead them to create in the space. This includes their ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, age, and ability.
It is important to understand that discrimination, prejudice and negative comments to members will not be tolerated.
EQUITY
Everybody deserves to be able to come and create. We understand that some folx may have barriers or may require extra support, modifications or alternative ways to work. Please reach out to discuss how we can ensure that your experience with Dabble is accommodating to your specific situation.

ACCESSIBILITY
Closely connected to equity, accessibility is not only valued, but imperative. Dabble Maker Space wants to ensure that we are accessible to those who would like to participate in our offerings. We are working on several strategies including; utilizing technology to build assistive devices for those with mobility and/or fine motor issues, ensuring we had a space that had accessible parking, entrances, hallways and washrooms and creating programming for a variety of skill levels. Additionally, for neurodivergent friends, we will prioritize a welcoming and flexible environment that takes sensory needs into account.
ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS
Dabble Maker Space Inc. hopes to divert waste from the landfill by recycling, upcycling and reusing what we can when we create.
SAFETY
Creating can be a fun, enjoyable and relaxing experience, but we also have to ensure the safety of individuals when in our space. This will look like:
-
being aware of surroundings
-
Ensuring tools are well maintained and taken care of
-
Receiving training on how to safely operate tools
-
Wearing protective gear when needed
-
Maintaining a clear and tidy space with ample lighting
-
Ensuring air filtration devices are on, when needed
In some cases it also means that certain tools can only be operated by select individuals who are trained to use them. This will include the 3D printer and XTool C02 Laser Cutter.
Training and access will be provided at the discretion of Dabble Maker Space Inc.
